In a gps receiver there is an inevitable time delay in the signal travelling in the antenna lead to the circuitry of the receiver. In a typical 5 metre lead the delay is about 15 nanoseconds, which, added on to the time for the signal to travel from the satellite to the antenna, would mean a serious inaccuracy if it was not compensated for.
