Don't the 690 and the 700 have similar HP? But one weighs about a hundred pounds more? So with that in mind, regarding seat-of-the-pants acceleration, I imagine the gearing of the Tenere may overcome that weight penalty only on it's top-end during highway riding as the 690 single peters out.

Im not sure whether the older Tenere 660 would be considered a direct competitor to the DR650 but there are a few going at very reasonable prices now that the Tenere 700 is the primary player. Reviews for the Ten660 say that it is top heavy and vibey as it is single cylinder, but probably just as capable as the DR650 on dirt and road.
