Skiing wise - there is an area ski pass (SALZBURG SUPERSKICARD) that also covers Saalbach & Hinterglemm which is well worth a day or two and is reached by bus in the centre of Zell am See - there is a fantastic ski circus starting by going up the "Schönleitenbahn" at the town of Vorderglemm just before Saalbach.
1. Re: Salzburg and Salzkammergut and Zell am See - how to choose. If you have completed a cycle tour of the Salzkammergut then you will find Zell am See pretty much of the same. I agree with the previous poster. If you love walking/cycling get down to the area around Hallstatt and spend a couple of days.

Zell Am See – The Schwalbenwand Runde Hike. This is a 4-5 hour long 11.5km hike which is moderate to strenuous, with the first 4-5km being uphill, a killer for your legs. The views over Zell Am See lake are absolutely phenomenal though and totally worth the sweat. They are some of the best we had on our trip!

Zell am See ski resort is a charming and lively lakeside town close to Austria's Hohe Tauern National Park; it's a popular year-round resort and has plenty of amenities and attractions for winter-sports visitors of all ages and abilities. Zell is definitely a contender for the title of 'most beautiful setting' in Austria.
