Honestly, it's not even like it was that good at the beginning. The huge open maps were great, but without silenced weapons enemies would pinpoint you instantly. It was fun, but not all that special. Crysis was a huge improvement, and I think Far Cry 3 did everything Far Cry 1 tried to do a thousand times better.
